LYE Town confirmed their highest ever league position after a 1-0 win against Loughborough University in their last game of the season on Saturday.

The Stourbridge Road outfit ended their Midland League campaign in fourth place, six points behind Sporting Khalsa but six ahead of Westfields, which betters the club’s previous top finish of sixth place in the 2014/15 season.

Despite the positive home result on Saturday, which saw a Jack Till goal on the 70th minute as the only difference between the two sides, a bad spell during the second half of the season saw the club’s title-winning chances slip from their grasps.

Before the new year, Lye were fighting alongside eventual Premier Division winners Alvechurch and Westfields for first place, having only lost one game from their opening 23 matches.

But after a slide set in following defeat to bottom-of-the-table side Brocton on January 2, Town won just seven of their final 19 league games.

Co-managers Martin Thomas and Darren Goodall will be hoping their players can rediscover their early season form at the start of the next campaign.
