CAPTAIN Jonathan Wright says a victory is on the horizon for his battling Old Hill players.

The side's winless run extended to nine games after a losing draw at Penkridge last Saturday.

Penkridge made 310-7 from their 55 overs after the visitors had won the toss and chose to field.

Openers Mohammed Ishtiaq (48) and Ishaq Mohammed (46) gave the home side a solid foundation before Attiq Chishti, batting at five, turned the screw with a fine century.

He scored an unbeaten 107 from just 83 balls, including 17 fours and two sixes.

The visitors were still in a decent position until number nine Shafiq Ahmed smashed a quick-fire 62 to boost his side's total.

In reply, Old Hill could only make 208-7 from their 55 overs as their top order struggled to go on to make a big score. Harry Baddams (47), Jonathan Wright (37) and Hamza Ahmed (48) all got runs but couldn't push on.

"We have suffered a few injuries this season but we'll just keep fighting," said Wright. "There is still a lot of cricket to be played.

"Though we're not in the position we would want to be, it does feel like a win is just around the corner.

"We got ourselves into a good position against Penkridge when we had them at about 170-7, but then Shafiq Ahmed came in at nine and really hurt us.

"In the end we have fought hard to make sure we didn't lose the game.

"There was still a few positives to take. Zahid Kafiat bowled really well without taking a wicket. He was beating the bat but just didn't get his rewards or the right bit of luck, which has happened the last few weeks as well. Hopefully that will change soon for him and for us."

The losing draw leaves Old Hill still at the bottom of Division Two of the Birmingham and District League and in search of a much-needed victory.

They will hope to get back to winning ways when they welcome third-placed Wombourne to Haden Hill this Saturday (noon start).

"We have beaten Wombourne already this season in the National Knockout Cup so hopefully we can go again and look for the win or the majority of the points.

"We'll stay confident and forward-thinking," added the skipper.
