HIMLEY Cricket Club captain Greg Wright hailed his side’s win over Moseley as their best of the season so far.

Wright’s side chased down a testing target for the second week running to clock up their third win on the spin and stay on the coat tails of Birmingham Premier League leaders Knowle and Dorridge.

Himley remain third in the division, eleven points behind the pace setters.

Wright said: “This was our best win of the season, certainly our best all round performance.

“We are still in there battling to stay in the title race. I thought the guys were fantastic, we are bowling well as a unit and we knocked off the runs really well on what was a difficult pitch.”

After winning the toss and deciding to bowl, Himley found the going tough before Stuart Wedge (2-22) removed openers Keith Bell (24) and Abdullah Awan (26) in quick succession with the score 56-2.

Huw Jones (43) and Usman Shabir got Moseley back on track with a 50 partnership but when Jones was dismissed by Saurabh Sehgal (2-72) Himley began to take wickets regularly and the hosts finished on 192-8 from 55 overs.

The visitors reply got off to the worst possible start as Chris Tranter was dismissed with the first ball of the innings, before Harshad Patel (35) and youngster Nitesh Patel (48) - who was moved up the order due to his recent good form - put on 92 for the second wicket.

After both fell in quick succession, Wright (35) and Michael Hill (41 not out) then put Himley well on course for victory. They eventually edged home with nine balls to spare.

Wright praised the attitiude of his “hungry” younger players, while he is also encouraged by the way his bowling attack has stepped up to cover the loss of star man Tim Heap, who is currently sidelined with a groin injury.

He said: “It’s particularly comforting to have the younger players doing so well, they play fearless cricket.

“It’s great for myself and the coach when young players perform under pressure, it goes to show they have great spirit.

“We changed the batting order around this week with both Nitesh and Michael Hill moving up. Nitesh in particular has been banging on the door for some time now and they both took their chance with both hands.

“They are hungry for runs and success.”

Himley will now look to continue their charge when they face 11th placed Walmley at home this Saturday (noon).
