HIMLEY CC skipper Greg Wright believes there is more to come from his side’s younger players after finishing the season on a high.

A seven wicket home win over Walmley saw Himley secure fifth place in the Birmingham Premier League after victories in three of their last four games.

The Stourbridge Road outfit endured an injury hit campaign and were forced to play without star bowler Tim Heap, while they also lost opening batsman Harshad Patel.

Wright believes his side have coped well in the circumstances.

He said: “At the start of the year we were aiming for a top four finish but after losing one of the best bowlers in the league in Tim, and then losing Harshad, things could have gone very, very wrong.

“To finish fifth in the circumstances is a fantastic achievement.

“The younger players have really stepped up and there will be plenty more to come from them next year, we have a good platform to build on.”

Stuart Wedge took 5-38 and Chris Tranter 3-33 as Himley dismissed Barnt Green for just 146 from 55 overs.

Tranter then struck a rapid 50 from 40 balls as the home side began their reply. Fellow opener Danny Cox perished for seven but an unbeaten 56 from Daniel Bassett, coupled with Nitesh Patel’s 27 not out, saw Himley home in just 30.5 overs.

Wright added: “It was a great performance, we bowled really well.

“I’m really pleased the players kept their desire to win right to the end of the season.”
