Halesowen club head up golf drive
5:20pm Friday 20th July 2012 in Sport
NOVICES are being urged to get into the swing of things at Halesowen Golf Club .
The Leasowes club are at the forefront of two schemes aimed at getting young adults and families involved.
Coaches will give an introduction to the sport and teach the basics in free sessions funded by the Birmingham Golf Development Programme and the English Golf Union.
Halesowen professional Jon Nicholas said: “They want us to promote the game and help deal with the shortfall in players.
“The first scheme is aimed at 16 to 24-year-olds as this has been identified as an age where people move away from the sport.
“We have also been given funding to run classes for families.
“These are open to anyone of any age and are totally free of charge.”
Nicholas will be hoping to replicate his success in attracting young members to the club in recent years.
His golf school, the Jon Nicholas Golf School Junior Academy, recruits from local schools and now has 50 players aged between five and 13, with 35 of those joining the club as junior members in the past 18 months.
Sessions for 16-24 year-olds and families will run over the next few weeks. To book email golf@jonni cholas.co.uk or call 0121 5130593 ext 3.
