Returning Newman heads off with the Hammer
11:46pm Tuesday 31st July 2012 in Sport
FORMER Heathen Kyle Newman emerged victorious at the F.A.S.T Golden Hammer event at Monmore Wood - but there was disappointment for the sizeable crowd as no home riders managed to make the rostrum.
Penkridge youngster Ashley Morris pulled off a sublime move in his penultimate ride to go from third to first on the final lap against other major contenders and set himself up for victory going into his last ride.
However, he trailed at the back in Heat 17 and Newman, who had been just one point behind Morris at the top of the standings, took the chequered flag to secure the title.
Stoke duo Simon Lambert and Ashley Birks then won their final rides to take second and third place respectively after countback - denying fans' favourite Morris a place on the rostrum.
Pre-meeting favourite Adam Roynon suffered two falls to end his chances as he finished down in joint sixth place on nine points.
Tom Perry was always in the mix but eventually finished fifth on ten points, whilst Byron Bekker also impressed to finish on nine - although a fall in his fourth ride ended his chances.
Track conditons quickly settled down after pre-meeting rain, and track staff also worked wonders to repair extensive fence damage which forced an early interval when Brendan Johnson and Dan Greenwood collided on the first bend of Heat 6, thankfully without injury to either rider.
