Horton soaks up national success
12:00pm Sunday 19th August 2012 in Sport
A DRAMATIC finish saw Stourbridge’s Britt Horton crowned a national swimming champion.
The Stourbridge Swimming Club member claimed gold in the 13-year-old 100-metre backstroke after the tightest of finishes in Sheffield — which included an agonising wait as the results were confirmed.
Horton also claimed fifth in the 200m backstroke to cap an impressive meeting for Stour swimmers.
Another fingertip finish saw Becki Cole take bronze in the 17 to 18 years 100m backstroke and she followed it up with fifth in the 200m.
Rich Spoor finished 10th after qualifying for the over-19s 200m breaststroke final but missed out on finals in the 200m individual medley and the 100m breaststroke.
Stour’s relay team of Adam Horton, Sam Matthews, Tom McCallum amd Kai Totney then beat their entry time to finish 30th overall in the boys 4x100m medley.
Head Coach Stew Nicklin said: “Britt Horton is such an amazing and naturally talented young lady.
“When she came to the club just over two years ago she was struggling to make county finals.
“But after being crowned Midland champion in 2011, she has gone from strength-to-strength and her effort has paid off to put the gold medal around her neck.
“This has been an amazing end of season championships for our swimmers.
“They have all put in a tremendous effort.”
