Nightmare for Whiley as she crashes out at first hurdle

HALESOWEN wheelchair tennis star Jordanne Whiley suffered a Paralympic nightmare as she crashed out in round one.

The 20-year-old was stunned 6-3 6-4 by Thailand’s Sakhorn Khanthasit in the singles event at Eton Manor yesterday.

British number two Whiley had taken a 3-0 lead in the first set but lost the next six games to fall a set behind and never recovered.

Speaking afterwards, the 20-year-old admitted the occasion had gotten to her.

Whiley said: “I did not want to crumble under the nerves and the pressure, but I did.

“I’m just really disappointed in myself. I was confident all the way through the match and never doubted myself.

“The crowds were fantastic, they were behind me. I was just shaking. I couldn’t control my shots.”

Despite the disappointment Whiley’s Games are far from over as she and partner Lucy Shuker begin their campaign in the women’s doubles tomorrow.
