Clarke rides round Wrekin to superb win

HALESOWEN Cycling Club’s Matt Clarke scored an excellent win in the Tour of the Wrekin road race.

The 18-year-old Hagley rider attacked from a five man break on the final lap of the 70 mile race held near Bridgnorth.

With no one else able to respond, Clarke crossed the line 52 seconds ahead of second placed rider Tony Kiss.

Speaking afterwards, a delighted Clarke said: “I read the race through from the wind direction and knew where to go to get away with the breakaway.

“On the last lap I was feeling strong and knew where to go on the steep part of the final climb and I hit them by surprise and very hard and then rode with all the fitness and energy that I had got left to the finish.

“I didnt look behind until I crossed the finish line and felt fantastic that I had won by a huge distance. It was the most amazing feeling!”
