Former News Sports Editor Max Hall is making waves writing about the West Midlands Premier League....from Germany.

BEER, bratwurst, Lou Reed and David Hasselhoff — just some of the many things you might associate with Berlin.

Thanks to the efforts of one former Midlands journalist, you can now throw the West Midlands Premier Football League into the mix.

Former News sports editor Max Hall moved to the German capital last year but the 1,000-mile gap couldn’t kill his love of all things non-league football.

The lifelong Lye Town fan now writes and produces Serie Z, a weekly digital magazine which casts its focus on the trials and tribulations of the league’s 22 clubs, from Bustleholme to Wolverhampton Casuals.

While the first question which might spring to mind is why, Hall revealed he had several reasons for starting the project.

He said: “The main reason was simple, I found myself long-term unemployed and had plenty of time on my hands.

“I’d been thinking for a while I needed to myself get into the 21st century and in some ways it came about by accident as I was learning how to use the web-design software.

“It’s also a way of keeping in touch with what’s going on.

“Because of the increasing pressures put on local newspapers it’s become increasingly difficult to find out what is going on, week in, week out at these clubs.

“These clubs don’t have the volunteers who can put a match report on the website after every game so there is room their for coverage.”

Though Serie Z may only be nine issues old, it has already expanded from four to 16 pages with colour photographs.

Hall speaks to managers and club officials on the phone, via email or by Skype from his Schoneberg flat each week and says the response from clubs has been very positive.

He said: “I got the impression the league were a bit nervous at first, I don’t think they could quite grasp why I was doing it.

“But after they saw the first couple of editions they were on board.

“I’m lucky because I know a lot of people at the clubs from working in the area and they have been very helpful.

“At the moment the magazine seems to be changing every week, it’s a work in progress.

“In the beginning I didn’t have any photographs but I’ve had a couple of lads come on board so it’s looking better all the time.

“The beauty of it is it’s my thing and I can do what I like with it.”

He added: “Ultimately I’d love to make a living out of it but I will carry on until the end of the season.”
