A NETHERTON teenager is aiming to conquer the world in cycle speedway.

Ricki Luke Johnson has proved a natural on the track since first taking up the sport at the age of nine.

And after claiming the title of junior European champion back in August, the 16-year-old is hoping to take on the best in the business at next year’s world championships in Australia.

Proud mum Rebecca said: “Ever since he started the sport people have been telling me he has what it takes to reach the very top.

“As soon as he could walk he was pedalling a bike. He has just gone up and up.

“When I first saw him ride I simply couldn’t believe how good he was.”

Johnson rode for Sandwell Lions before switching to his current club, Wednesfield Aces, last year.

His racing exploits have seen him compete as far away as Poland and the family are now looking for a sponsor in order for him to realise his world title dream.

Rebecca added: “The great thing for Ricki is he loves the sport, it’s his hobby and the only thing he is interested in.

“If he were to win a world title it would be a dream come true.

“We need to fine more than £2,000 in order to send him to Australia and we’ve written to plenty of local businesses to see if they would be interested in sponsoring him.”

Anyone interested in sponsoring Johnson can contact Rebecca on 07891 531198.
