Nine wicket Waqas the tonic for Social
10:40pm Thursday 14th June 2012 in Sport
STOURBRIDGE Social claimed a 73-run win at Tenbury thanks to nine-wicket haul from Waqas Ahmed.
Victory came despite a tough start as after being put into bat, Social were quickly reduced to 22-4 following a fierce opening spell from bowlers Alexander Mason and George Pearson.
Waqas and Michael McDonagh faced the task of rebuilding the innings and put on a 50-partnership, which ended when Pearson removed the former for 15.
Skipper Richard Milner continued the good work and after McDonagh fell for 41, he turned aggressor, striking two huge sixes in a partnership with Andrew Payne.
Milner was eventually out for 42 but not before he had set his side en route to a total of 184.
Social made an early breakthrough with the ball as Waqas (9-49) removed Andrew Adams for a duck.
Alexander Mason came in and immediately demonstrated his all-round abilities, punishing anything short of a length.
But the rest of the Tenbury batting line up could not handle Waqas as wickets continued to tumble.
The Tenbury skipper protected the tail for a number of overs until Waqas took an incredible ninth wicket to remove Sam Mason as Tenbury were dismissed for 111.
Social now sit sixth in Division Three ahead of this Saturday’s home game with Alveley.
Amblecote and Wollaston claimed a four-wicket win over Hallow in Division Five.
Batting first, the visitors struggled with the damp wicket and were restricted to 175-8. Dominic Priest (4-31) was the pick of the bowlers.
The hosts started their reply well, with John Pearsall (34) and Matt Hall (45) putting on 70 for the second wicket.
A mini-collapse put he home side in a tricky situation but Richard Hall (24 not out) and Adam Lock (21no) steered them to victory.
