OLD Halesonians came through their strongest test of the season so far on Saturday when they defeated Willenhall 23-16 at Wassell Grove.
During a closely contested first half, both teams failed to break down their opponents' defence and only managed a string of penalties each - Seb Rose kicking three from three for the home side to leave the game tied up at 9-9 at the break.
Following a stern half time team talk Old Halesonians knew they had to book up their ideas and this seemed to have the desired effect as Rose added to his penalties with a well taken try.
However, Old Hales couldn't maintain the pace and allowed Willenhall back in with a try to leave the game in the balance.
Fortunately a good break from outside centre Jonny Martin settled the home sides nerves and with a great roar to seal an unconvincing 23 - 16 win.
This Saturday Old Hales will travel to Burntwood.
