Starlets set for big test
Speed demon: DK Colts full-back Jak Davis has been in impressive form on the way to the semi-final.
Speed demon: DK Colts full-back Jak Davis has been in impressive form on the way to the semi-final.

Dudley Kingswinford RFC's sensational starlets will be taking centre stage this Saturday as they set their sights on success in the National Colts Cup semi-final away at Nuneaton.

The youngsters will be playing at the same time as the club's relegated first team who welcome Scunthorpe to Heathbrook.

But with three coach loads of supporters already heading East across the Midlands it's clear what the fans see as the priority.

The all-conquering Colts side are now only one game away from a grand final at Northampton's Franklin's Gardens.

Joint head coaches Neil Shillingford and Mark Lockley, who also look after first-team matters will also be making the trip to Nuneaton.

Neil said: "We will be concentrating on the Colts on Saturday.

"When we took over first-team affairs one of the provisos was that we would continue to coach the Colts and on Saturday that is what we will be doing.

"Anyway, I think the club now have the Colts success at the top of their priorities.

"It's not ideal that both games will take place on Saturday afternoon but with Nuneaton's ground commitments to the town's football and American Football sides there was no other alternative."

Shillingford believes the barnstorming form of the club's up and coming youngsters has helped lift the doom and gloom surrounding the senior side's disastrous season, which has already seen them lose their fight against relegation to Midlands Division Two.

He said: "There's no doubt it's been a terrible season for the first-team but I think the success of the Colts has taken the edge off the disappointment.

"I think seeing such a good crop of youngsters coming through the club has lifted everyone's spirits."

The coach believes his young charges will be brimming with confidence following a memorable away win at long-term bogey side Moseley in the semi-final of the North Midlands Cup last week.

The only injury doubt for the mouth-watering match is Gareth Bown who is set face a late fitness test.

Meanwhile the senior side will play their final home league game of the season with Ian Langford and Andy McEwan both set to return from injury.
