Brave cup run ended

Walking wounded: DK Colts prop Richard Kelly puts his body on the line in their defeat to Nuneaton on Saturday.

Dudley Kingswinford's dream of reaching the National Colts Cup Final came to an end after they came unstuck away at Nuneaton.

The Heathbrook starlets went down 14-5, but joint-head coach Neil Shillingford was still very proud of his young side's efforts.

He said: "We were all gutted after the game.

"We said before the game that we wanted to come off the pitch knowing we had given it our best shot but unfortunately our first half performance was below our usual standards and despite an excellent second-half showing we just ran-out of time in the end.

"However we come away with a lot positives from this cup run.

" If somebody would have said to us we would reach the last four of the National Colts Cup we would have snapped their hand off.

"We are over the moon with the lads for getting this far and they have done the club proud."

Despite the defeat the Colts still have a shot at a trophy when they play rivals Stourbridge in the final of the North Midlands Cup next month.

Shillingford believes the Nuneaton experience will stand them in good stead for the final.

He said: "I think this defeat will make us even more determined to win the North Midlands Cup.

"I think a few of the lads froze on the big stage but the more experience you get in big games the better you will be so hopefully that will be the case with us."

Meanwhile the senior side were guaranteed the wooden spoon in Midlands Division One after losing at home to fellow relegated side Scunthorpe on Saturday.
