Duo fancy their chances
Promotion back to the Birmingham and District Premier League is top of the agenda for Halesowen Cricket Club's exciting young charges.
Mark Fisher will again lead the team, with new players including Mo Ishtiaq, an attacking opening batsman from Aston Manor, Laeq Chishti, a seam bowler from Old Hill, and Jack Horton, an ex-Devon Minor Counties batsman, currently studying at Worcester University.
Halesowen youth players looking to break into the team include Cameron Mapstone and Kester Moseley.
Highly-rated Pakistani pace bowler Imran Ali returns as overseas player, and the club will again have the services of Worcestershire's Academy player Matt Pardoe and contracted professional Daryl Mitchell when not on county duty.
The season gets under way on Saturday when they travel to Stratford-Upon-Avon before travelling to Walmley on Sunday in the first round of the National Knockout.
An excited Fisher said: "We're all looking forward to the new season - and we'll be pushing hard for promotion."
Steve Baker will once again be leading the seconds. The squad is strengthened this year by the return from Australia of all-rounder Mark Hutchinson and the news that Richard Cox will be available for the majority of games.
Baker said: "We have also recruited some promising youngsters - quick bowler Arsalaan Mahmood who could well feature in the firsts and Shehzad Ali, a left-handed opening batsman.
"In addition to this, many of our youngsters are now coming through into senior cricket."
They will start the season with a home game against Barnt Green.
Meanwhile, on Saturday (May 3), in the Crusader Worcestershire County Division Four leagues, Halesowen thirds led by Kevin Davies are at home at the Earls ground against Bromsgrove, while the fourths captained by Alex Farrar travel to Bromsgrove.
Old Hill firsts begin their 2008 campaign in the Birmingham and District Premier Cricket League Division One at Shrewsbury (1pm Start) on Saturday bolstered by host of exciting new recruits.
The Haden Hill outfit have snapped up Natham Round, Worcestershire star Richard Jones and new Australian overseas player Chris Hansberry.
The Aussie replaces Riaz Sheikh and joins the club with a big reputation for a 21-year-old, having played for Wembley CC last season taking over 50 wickets with his leg spin and he is also a useful batsman.
They will once again be captained by Karl Pearson.
The seconds also begin with a game against Shrewsbury at home with a 1.30pm start. Their squad has also been improved in respect of quality and numbers so things are looking good all round with Mo Javaid taking over as skipper
On Sunday the firsts host Dunstall in the opening round of the National Knockout Cup with a 1pm start.
