Gornal Athletic 4 – 2 Wisbech Town (AET)

IAN Rowe’s men made history again on Saturday with an excellent victory against the much fancied Wisbech Town, to secure their place in the last 16 of the FA Vase.

They now face a trip to Cornwall against Bodmin Town.

Gornal did not start the game well and were two goals down in the first seven minutes.

A back pass from Pete Wood to Matt Martin saw the keeper miss hit his kick, the ball bounced off Napier who had an easy finish from twelve yards out. The second goal was conceded after a break down the left from Ogbonna, the chasing Gornal defenders could not contain the Wisbech man, his low shot finding the bottom corner of the net.

The travelling supporters thought they were going to see an onslaught, however, after fifteen minutes the home side rallied and settled into the game and began to peg back Wisbech.

Gornal created a number of decent chances but could not reduce the deficit before the break.

From the start of the second half there was only one team who would go and win the game.

Gornal came out and looked more comfortable in possession and worked hard to chase and close down their opponents.

The pressure paid off, on the hour mark, Chris Rabone was fouled in the area, and Lee Wherton stepped up to score the spot kick to reduce the arrears.

Wisbech were now chasing shadows as Gornal stepped up the pace of the game, and with twenty minutes remaining they got a deserved equaliser with a superb finish from Chris Rabone.

Marvin Nisbett won possession down the left and found Rabone on the edge of the area who fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Gornal continued to dominate the remainder of normal time, but could not find the winning goal.

It took Gornal only ten minutes of extra time to get ahead in the game.

With Wisbech looking a tired and beaten side, Kristian Green attacked down the right, beating three defenders, his pull back from the by line found Calum Martin unmarked, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Gornal secured their place in the next round with two minutes remaining, a Matt Weyman shot looped up off the keeper and Marvin Nisbett headed home.
