Mole: Time to ditch fancy football

ANDY Mole admits it’s time for Causeway United to ditch the fancy football to avoid a relegation scrap.

United slumped to a 7-0 defeat Midland Alliance leaders Stratford Town on Saturday and were then beaten 3-1 at Dunkirk on Tuesday.

This Saturday they host fellow strugglers Heath Hayes and Mole, who has now been back at the club for more than a month, says he is tired of losing games and is ready to make changes.

He said: “When I came in I said I’d give it a month before making any changes but the time has come.

“We are a bottom-half side, we are easily beaten and that must change.

“We need to go back to basics and that may mean trying to play good football takes a backseat for a while.

“Once we make ourselves hard to beat we can build from there.

“We’ve got some good footballers in the side but they have been given a chance and the results have not come.”

Causeway were four down at Stratford by half-time, though Mole felt their performance was not as bad as the scoreline suggests.

He said: “It sounds strange but I didn’t feel we played that badly.

“It just seemed everything they hit went in.

“They must have had nine shots on goal and ended up winning 7-0.

“Individually they were much better than us. Their two strikers are on good, good money and were simply too powerful.

“Perhaps we lacked a bit of team spirit when the going got tough.

“We need to stick together a little bit more.”

Mole is still hoping to finalise a deal for Studley midfielder Matt Collins, though he admits the move could fall through.

Studley waived the seven days which allowed Mole to speak to Collins but the Causeway boss is still waiting for the player to accept the switch.

He said: “I spoke to Matt and he seemed keen but since then I’ve not heard from him.

“This can be a problem when you are down near the bottom of the table. Players can start to shy away from you.”
