Peacocks pulverised in late onslaught
4:55pm Thursday 29th August 2013 in Football
GORNAL Athletic grabbed a compelling 2-1 win over Loughborough University at the weekend before being brought back down to earth again on Monday with a 4-1 defeat to Causeway United in the Midland Alliance.
The loss to Causeway was compounded by the fact the Peacocks took the lead on 79 minutes and then completely capitulated.
Gornal manager Brian Knight said: “Causeway battered us before Craig Nolan scored against the run of play.
“It had been a credit to the side that we’d held Causeway at bay for that length of time.
“But after we’d scored, it was as though we’d had enough of their physicality.
“We will learn from this game, but I have to see whether I can bring some experienced players in who can stamp their authority on the game.
“The boys were looking for a leader against Causeway and there wasn’t one.”
It was a total contrast to the victory at Loughborough thanks to goals from Freddie Owani and Callum Reeves.
Knight said: “The pitch was perfect, both sides kept the ball on the deck and tried to play football, which suited us down to the ground.
Gornal head to Coleshill Town on Saturday.
