Lye suffer FA Cup heartbreak
10:16am Thursday 5th September 2013 in Football
LYE Town’s interest in this season’s FA Cup is over after they lost 2-1 at Coventry Sphinx.
Steve Weaver headed Lye in front on the stroke of half time after converting a Lee Dimmock cross.
It could have been 2-0 by that stage but Damien Whitcombe had a penalty saved after Stuart Ward had been brought down.
Ashley Jackson levelled matters for Sphinx in the 81st minute before Ricky Fletcher forced home a stoppage time winner to break Lye hearts.
In a somewhat bad tempered affair, Lye had Stuart Ward, together with a Sphinx player sent off following a late fracas.
Joint boss Martin Thomas declared: “There were certain things that left a bad taste, but let’s say we deserved more than we got.”
Lye worked the FA Cup defeat out of their system on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over rivals Cradley Town.
Damien Whitcombe struck twice before new signing Craig Edwards crowned his debut with a late third goal.
Lye travel to Bromsgrove Sporting this Saturday in the FA Vase.
