Gornal boss faces baptism of fire

GORNAL Athletic’s new boss Matthew Price was given a baptism of fire when his side crashed 4-1 to Midland Alliance leaders Highgate United.
Having replaced Brian Knight last week, the new man picked up plenty of positives from the defeat.
He said: “At least it shows me what the standard is in this league and what is required.
“I was disappointed with the result, but pleased with the player’s attitude and commitment. There’s plenty to build upon.”
Price was handed a couple of setbacks ahead of the game when proposed signings Oliver Bashford and Mike Blore pulled out.
Bashford, who has been on Wolverhampton Wanderders’ books and was due to have trials with Brentford, went down with a stomach bug, while Blore suffered an injury while training with Sutton Coldfield Town.
Price did manage to include new signings Carlos Thompson, on loan from Rushall Olympic, along with former Sutton Coldfield youngsters Rudi Misambo and Tony Okome against Highgate.
And at one stage, it looked as though Gornal could get something out of the game when they levelled in the second half following a 25 yard strike from full-back Callum Reeves, but Gornal fell away.
Price added: “We’d hit the cross bar a couple of minutes before we equalised and were looking good.
“But our fitness levels fell away and errors started creeping into our game as a result.”
Price hopes to sign former Sutton youngster Carl Murrain ahead of Saturday’s visit of Dunkirk.
