LYE Town returned to top spot in the West Midlands League this week following a 3-0 win at Bromyard Town.
With last Saturday’s proposed game against Wolves Casuals called off, it presented the opportunity for Shawbury United to leapfrog in the table ahead of Lye.
But Lye were able to restore their two point advantage courtesy of two well-taken first half goals from Kevin Nickle before central defender Damien Whitcombe weighed in with a third with a stooping header from a Matt Johnson corner.
However Lye didn’t come through the game unscathed, Nickle limping off early in the second half – adding to the absence of leading marksman Ricky Anslow who had earlier sustained an ankle injury during a friendly with Rushall Olympic. Lye travel to Shifnal Town this Saturday and then host Sporting Khalsa on Tuesday.
STOURBRIDGE’S love affair with the Worcestershire Senior Cup came to halt on Tuesday when they lost 3-2 to Evesham United.
The Glassboys, who have won the trophy for the past three years, led 2-0 at one stage through Tom Berwick and Jordan Fitzpatrick, but Evesham responded with goals by Elliott Kennedy, Lance Smith and an extra-time Jared Wilson penalty.
