Gornal ready for survival showdown

GORNAL Athletic's Midland Alliance future will be decided this weekend.

They are preparing for a winner takes all relegation scrap against rivals Heath Hayes at Garden Walk on Saturday.

The Peacocks, who now sit third from bottom, will go head-to-head with fifth-from-bottom Heath Hayes in the last game of the season.

With their opponents just one point ahead, a win would secure survival for Andy Wyton's side.

They go into the game after a good 1-1 draw away to AFC Wulfrunians on Monday. Dreniz Bala netted the equaliser for Athletic to keep them firmly in the fight to secure their Alliance status.

They had to bounce back from a disappointing 4-0 defeat at bottom side Heather St John's last Saturday. They were up against it after captain Craig Stevenson was dismissed for a kick out on a Heather player after just 10 minutes.

Wyton said: "Saturday's game is massive. The players know what they have to do and we are going to give it everything we have to make sure we stay in the league.

"Our recent form has been good and we have picked up 20 points from 15 games. If they club had been offered a one-off game to secure their survival a few months ago, they would have taken it. Now we need to go and show what we are capable of."
