Gornal look to avoid banana skin at Griff

IAN Rowe admits Gornal Athletic want to avoid tasting their own medicine at Nuneaton Griff.
The Peacocks, who further enhanced their reputation as giant-killers with an FA Cup win at Evo-Stik Northern League First Division South outfit Sutton Coldfield Town last weekend, face a banana skin of their own this Saturday when they travel to Warwickshire in the FA Vase.
Rowe says they cannot afford any complacency.
He said: “The boot will be on the other foot this Saturday, we will certainly be a scalp for them.
“They are a level six team and we are level five but both of us are in great form.
“It’s going to be tough though saying that, I will be looking to make a few changes to give the whole squad a chance.”
Gornal’s reward for victory over the Royals is a mouth-watering home tie with Worcester City in the second qualifying round.
After surviving a first half bombardment thanks to keeper James Pemberton, goals from Chris Rabone, Matt Weyman and Marvin Nisbett saw the visitors record a famous win.
Despite his delight at the final whistle, Rowe revealed he and assistant Lee Rolfe had some harsh words for the players during the half-time break.
He said: “We needed to get into them and we had to say a few home truths.
“I told the players we should have been out of the cup. “They could have scored three times in the first five minutes and Pembo (Pemberton) made some superb saves.
“In the second half we picked up and both sides had chances. But we took ours.”
Rowe may well put in a call to Dudley Town boss Andy Burgess when he comes to research Griff, after they ended the Robins’ FA Cup involvement with a 1-0 win at the Dell.
