GREAT Britain’s women’s team set up a semi-final tie with Germany in Thursday’s World Team Cup semi-final after easing past Spain in Antalya, Turkey. Paralympic doubles bronze medallist Jordanne Whiley from Halesowen put the third seeds on course with a confident 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lola Ochoa, before her London 2012 partner and the highest-ranked Brit Lucy Shuker put the tie beyond doubt by defeating Elena Jacinto 6-3, 6-2. With the result already secured Louise Hunt partnered Whiley in the doubles and the pair eased past Jacinto and Ochoa 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the semi-finals in style. The victory means Great Britain will face second seeds Germany on Thursday as the team of Hunt, Shuker and Whiley attempt to reach their second World Team Cup final since 2009. The World Team Cup is the wheelchair tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup or Federation Cup.

HALESOWN Cycling Club’s Matt Clarke enjoyed a relative bad day at the office in the West Midlands Regional Road Race Championships held on Sunday. As is often the case with cycle road racing the final placing of a rider does not always tell the true story and over a tough 85-mile course at Hanbury near Burton-on-Trent Clarke missed the key breakways and despite finishing strongly the Hagley youngster could manage only 12th.

STOURBRIDGE won the West Midland inter-town snooker competition for the first time since 1999 when they defeated Chase-Rugeley 6-1. On the neutral tables of Wednesbury Conservative club, Ashley Sidaway with a 55 break and Steve Mason gave Stourbridge a perfect start, and although Adam Ness made it 3-0, Adrian Rosa, with a 52 break, brought Chase-Rugeley back into the game. Andy Smith, at 20, the youngest Stourbridge player, sealed victory with a 39 break, and Rob Pitt and Gavin Sloan completed a 6-1 success. Unbeaten start intact as Enville crush Rush

ENVILLE continued their unbeaten run in the Worcestershire Cricket League Division Two with a crushing win over Rushwick. After losing the toss and being asked to bat Enville could only manage 142 all out with Matthew Branch 25 and Andy Webster 30. In reply the Enville opening pair of James Willis, who bowled 7.5 overs and took 3-30, and Ben Shorter, whose seven overs yielded 5-32 plus two run outs, helped shoot Rushwick for 62 LYE have a slender one-point lead at the top of Division Three following a two-wicket win against Romsley and Hunnington. The visitors were dismissed for 158 in just 35.2 overs, Adam Meacham taking 4-59 and Azhar Naeem 4-42 but facing a modest target they were made to work hard for victory. Imran Riaz made an important 45 by Amin Javed (3-36) and skipper Steven Randall (3-36) made life hard for the leaders right to the end, but they eventually squeezed home on 161-8. l STOURBRIDGE Social are still in a comfortable mid-table position despite defeat at home to Avoncroft. Social made 181-9 from their allotted overs but the visitors eased to 185-3 thanks largely to 64 from Matt Hare. l HIMLEY are still bottom but did cling on for a losing draw at prmotion-chasing Malvern. In the end they were grateful to a resilient unbeaten 35 from opener Matt Bowen who batted throughout as they finished on 133-9, Simon Lane taking 4-30. Earlier the hosts had reached 286-6, Andy Cullen (88), Rob Francis (57), skipper Anthony Arnold (70) all amongst the runs. l Enville seconds could not repeat the success of the first after being set 235 to win,Trevor Spears 3-45, only managing169 all out with Jimmy Smith top scoring with 76 not out On Sunday Enville played in the National Village Knock Out against Cleobury Mortimer scoring 185 all out with Matt Branch 44 and Rob Miller 30 top scoring. In reply Tom Bingham took 4-26 to bowl the home side out for 155.
