HALESOWEN'S Jordanne Whiley narrowly missed out on a second major doubles title in the space of three weeks.

The Wimbledon champion finished runner-up in the women’s doubles at the British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Nottingham.

The 22-year-old British number one, who is eyeing a full house of Grand Slam doubles titles this season partnering Japan’s Yui Kamiji, renewed her London 2012 bronze medal-winning partnership with Lucy Shuker at the Super Series event in Nottingham as the duo build towards Rio 2016.

They stormed into the semi-finals without dropping a game before a 7-6(2), 6-1 win over the fourth seeds, Dutchwoman Marjolein Buis and South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane, then earned second seeds Whiley and Shuker a place in the final against Aniek van Koot of the Netherlands and Kamiji.

The top two Brits on the Tennis Foundation’s Wheelchair Tennis Performance Programme earned themselves an early break advantage in both sets in the title decider, but on both occasions the top seeds fought back to seal a 7-5, 6-4 win.

“I don’t think we did much wrong and there’s not a lot else we could have done apart from win the title, they just played the big points very well,” said Whiley, who is planning to partner Kamiji again at the US Open in New York in early September as they bid to add to their Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon titles.

“I tried a few things that I’ve been working on in training and I think it’s been a very successful week and I’ve played some great tennis. If I keep playing like that the US Open will be very exciting,” she added.
