DUDLEY boxer Ryan ‘Tank’ Aston has once more set his sights on another title tilt following victory last weekend.

The light-middleweight returned to winning ways with a 40-35 points success against Halesowen-based Kevin McAuley at Chase Leisure Centre, Cannock, last Saturday.

The Priory Park pugilist got the job done to put last month’s loss against current Midland champion Jason Welborn well and truly behind him.

Rowley Regis’ Welborn weathered an early storm from Aston in Wolverhampton on June 6 before eventually taking the ten-round contest 96-94, according to referee Terry O’Connor.

That decision sparked debate among fight fans with many having Aston ahead after flooring Welborn with a vicious body shot in the fifth.

Now the 24-year-old southpaw is determined to claim the title he thinks should already be his.

He said: “I needed to get straight back in the ring for my own peace of mind and to show everyone that defeat hasn’t knocked my confidence in any way. If anything, I’m hungrier now than ever to take that title.

“I want a rematch with Jason but I don’t think he wants it.

“We will just have to wait and see what happens. Either way, come November I want that title to be mine. If that is because I have beaten Jason or if it is because I have beaten someone else because he has vacated it then so be it.

“That title should have been mine, everyone knows that and I think Jason knows that, too. The only person who didn’t was Terry O’Connor.

“But that isn’t Jason or his team’s fault and he is a fighter I respect and wish well for the future. But first I am determined to set the record straight.

“My hope is that we will be able to get it back on.

“Ultimately he will have to fight me again if he stays at the same weight. If it isn’t for the Midland title this time around then it will be at some stage after.

“If he vacates the title to move up then I will just beat who is put in front of me come November.”

Aston, meanwhile, was pleased with his night’s work against McAuley last weekend.

“It was a good four rounds,” he added. “I wanted even more rounds, especially after training for ten rounds last time.

“Once I finished, I did some more work shadow boxing and skipping.

“The fight went very well. I was very focused on the job in hand and I got back out, proved that I’m ready and a real force that can’t be ignored.”

Aston said he will now take a summer break before preparing for a potential title tilt at the end of the year.

“I have been very busy and a lot of my training camps have merged into one,” he added.

“I am now going to have a well-earned break before looking towards November.”
