JODIE Stimpson showed her fighting spirit to secure a second-placed finish in the third leg of the World Triathlon Series last weekend.

The Oldbury triathlete bounced back from a disappointing performance at Australia's Gold Coast to bag the runner-up spot in Cape Town behind fellow Brit Non Stanford.

The previous showing in Australian was billed as a straight shoot-out between Stimpson and Wales athlete Helen Jenkins for GB's final team spot for the Rio Olympics.

Jenkins' win was a major set-back for Stimpson who now faces missing out on an Olympic place once again.

However, despite the disappointment, she came back fighting in Cape Town to play her part in a British one-two.

Stanford kicked in some extra effort in the final kilometre of the run and was able to secure the gold medal position as she made her way into the venue stadium running solo. Her victory not only granted her, her first gold of the season, but it also guaranteed that Great Britain owned Cape Town for the third consecutive year.

Stimpson followed into the finish chute just seven seconds behind and solidified her third-straight time on the WTS podium this season.

Stimpson said of her silver medal: “To be honest I didn’t really expect anything from this race, the last two weeks have been pretty dreadful. If anyone follows me on social media you have seen that it has been a really rough couple of weeks, so I am just psyched to come away with a podium.”

Stimpson now sits in second-place overall in the World Series standings ahead of the next event in Yokohama, Japan, on May 14-15.
