OLD Hill finally had something to shout about this week when they recorded their first win of the season after beating Bridgnorth by three wickets in Birmingham League Division One.

It followed a shake-up in the ranks at Haden Hill which saw Dan Bresnan and Zain Hussain leave the club last week.

Bresnan has joined Staffordshire side Beacon while Hussain has now switched to Highcroft Great Barr.

Instead, skipper Danny Cox promoted wicketkeeper Stephen King and Joe Samuels from the seconds while Sam Flavell has arrived at Haden Hill from Beacon.

Cox said: “It got the response I was looking for and I hope we’ve turned a corner now.

“The batting has been letting us down this season and I think we’ve been lacking in a bit in confidence being such a young side. I hope this win has brought the confidence back, although we made hard work of it at times.”

Old Hill had made a massive impact with the ball by bowling Bridgnorth out for just 93 runs.

Billy-Jo Cox caused early problems, picking up the first three wickets as Bridgnorth were reduced to 19 for three.

But it was Ashfak ‘Sharkey’ Hussain who ripped the heart out of Bridgnorth’s batting as he claimed five for 28 off 13 overs.

Nigel Davenport picked up two for 29 while Cox claimed three for 12 off seven overs.

Worcestershire paceman Charlie Morris managed a top score of 24 but threatened to produce much more damage with the ball as he bagged an impressive six for 27 from 13 overs in reply.

Monil Patel plundered 33 with the bat as Old Hill looked well placed at 69 for two.

But they lost five wickets in the space of eight runs and slumped to 77 for seven before limping over the line on 97 for seven.

Old Hill remain bottom but will now be looking to build on their first success this term. They will be put to the test this Saturday when they travel to second-placed Dorridge.

Cox is planning to stick with the same side that beat Bridgnorth. He said: “I hope the confidence taken from the win over Bridgnorth continues at Dorridge as we will need to be at our best.”
