DUDLEY boxing prospect Sahil Khan secured gold at the prestigious Monkstown International Box Cup in Ireland.

The Hillcrest pupil, aged 13, who is coached at Wolverhampton’s Merridale gym, got the better of a host of young fighters to bag success in Dublin.

The competition is billed as Europe’s largest boxing tournament for schoolboys/girls/juniors and under-18s.

Khan’s selection was based on his previous achievements after he became Area Champion.

Success came after Khan beat two Irish champions and another European-experienced Irish fighter in the final.

Dad Ifraz Khan said: “Sahil trained really hard for this tournament. It was a proud moment for myself and the entire town.

“Ireland was a very difficult tournament as the competition was not just from the talented Irish fighters but from International Amateur Boxers. Overall the experience will motivate Sahil to train even harder and bring all the gold medals and wins to Dudley.”

Fighters from Dudley’s Priory Park also tasted victory at the event.

They took a squad of 10 to the tournament and landed three gold medals thanks to the efforts of Josh Jeavons, Connor Jones and James Mongan.
