LYE Town have re-signed striker James Spray from Alvechurch after he left the club in March to join the Midland Football League rivals.

Spray joined Wolves academy in 2006 and signed a professional contract in 2009. He scored on his senior debut for Wolves in September 2011 in a league cup win against Millwall.

He then joined league side Accrington Stanley on loan in October 2011.

After leaving Wolves in 2012, Spray signed for AFC Telford United, before joining Stourbridge in 2013 and then Lye in 2013.

Last season, as club captain at Lye, he made 31 appearances and scored 12 goals before moving to Alvechurch.

Spray started his first game back at Lye on the bench in a 2-0 win against Stourport Swifts on Saturday.

Town co-manager Martin Thomas said the singing of Spray, coupled with another “interesting” new faces could be the “final pieces of the jigsaw”.

He said: “It’s great that we’ve been able to resigned James and I’ve got a couple of calls out for some others to join us.

“It will be very interesting to see whether some of the deals can come off or not, but if they do, they could be the final pieces of the jigsaw.”

Thomas said he has also been impressed with the influx of quality players moving down the levels to play in the Midlands league this season.

He added: “There is more quality than I can ever remember. This league’s very decent this year.

“It’s a very competitive league and at this level, the quality of football is getting better and better as players drop down from the levels above.

“It’s all because players don’t have the time to travel the length of the country to play.

“We’ve got a couple of lads who could easily play in the level above, or the level above that to be honest, but they have jobs so they can’t travel to Blyth Spartans on a Tuesday night like the Stourbridge players have to.

“But those players dropping down, coming to clubs like the Lye, makes our league a tougher and better one in terms of quality, which is great for the fans.”
