HIS goals have proved vital for Sandwell Action this season and prolific marksman Jason Wood emerged the hero again as he steered his side in to the final of the Clinton Cup, writes Dave McLean.

Wood struck twice as the Action men saw off a strong challenge from Shere Punjab Jacks to set up a final clash against Springvale Steelers, in the Lawsons sponsored competition, at AFC Wulfrunians ground on April 26 (7.45pm).

An early injury to their keeper did not help the Shere cause, but they only trailed 1-0 at the interval when the last line of defence eventually withdrew. Five minutes into the second period Shere were back in the tie with an equaliser from Arun Sanghera.

But Sandwell responded almost immediately to restore the lead, before a third goal, ten minutes from time, finally ended the Shere dream. Ricky Danton was Sandwell's other scorer.

In the Martyn Chell Cup, sponsored by Saint Gillard, Pensnett Panthers boosted their hopes of a semi final ticket, coming from behind to defeat Claregate Rangers by the odd goal in five.

Pensnett, last season's Birmingham FA Sunday Amateur Cup winners, grabbed an early advantage, before Claregate bounced back with a double penalty reply, both put away successfully by defender Mark Trow for a 2-1 interval lead.

It was just before the hour when Pensnett got back on level terms, before grabbing what proved the winner with 20 minutes remaining. The goal heroes for the Panthers were in-form Ryan Cartwright (two) and Grant Dalton.
