HALESOWEN Academy's star rider Jack Stanton-Warren travels to the National Road Race Championships this weekend in the best possible form having landed a brace of major wins last weekend.

He took victory in the Battle of the Braes race in central Scotland and the Caithwaite road race in Cumbria.

Stanton-Warren cannot wait to see how he matches up to the best cyclists in Britain on Sunday in the national championship in the Isle of Man, when he will be able to gauge himself against multiple Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish and Team Sky's Tour de France stars such as Peter Kennaugh, Ian Stannard and Luke Rowe.

"It's the perfect situation because I am in great form and I have nothing to lose,"said Stanton-Warren. "There will be no expectations on my shoulders. I'm going to go and enjoy the occasion. This is a whole different level to where I normally race and it will be valuable experience to compete in something on this scale."

Stanton-Warren's first win of the weekend came in the Battle of the Braes road race over a tough 72-mile course near Callander in central Scotland, where his main goal was to outwit current Scottish strong man John Archibald. He escaped in a 10-rider group early in the race, attacked again as Archibald drew near in a chase group and ended up in a five-rider lead group with four members of the same team, ProVision Scotland, including Archibald.

"The only thing to do was attack again, so I went away with one of his team mates, Archibald caught us, he tried to go straight past so I had to hang on for grim death, but then the finish was a head wind sprint on the top of the main climb which I timed right."

The following day, Stanton-Warren repeated the feat south of the border near Carlisle, biding his time until late on in the 75-mile race at Caithwaite, on a rolling course.

"We caught an early break with two of the seven laps to go, then I escaped with two others on the final lap, and got the sprint right."
