Stourbridge Lions 24 - 10 Rugby Lions

THE Lions gained what could be their greatest win ever after defeating a club tipped to be in the mix for promotion.

Rugby Lions arrived at Stourton Park third placed in Division One West and looking to overturn the Lions who are playing at this level for the first time.

The Black Country boys had other plans and took an early lead with an early penalty from Tom Mitchell.

This was followed by another penalty score before the visitors replied with a penalty of their own on 15 minutes.

The game evened out although the Lions displayed ferocity and discipline in their tackling to deny Rugby attacking opportunities.

Mitchell slotted another penalty on 35 minutes before the decisive moment of the match when Cass Brookes and Alex Jones combined on the left.

Jones dashed 15 metres to the line and touched down and Mitchell added the extras to make the half time score 16-3.

The second half opened with a break from right to left leaving George Tildesley to power through to the line and over however the try was ruled out after the referee decided that he had spilled the ball before grounding it.

The Stourbridge defence continued to frustrate Rugby and on the hour Mitchell added another penalty score.

With 10 minutes to go Stourbridge added their second try after a 60m clearance from Sam Wilson and a stolen lineout catch in the Rugby 22 led to a break from Tom Noote.

The ball was passed inside and then outside to Fred Brookes who dived over in the corner.

Rugby added a converted try in the dying minutes but it was too late to deny Stourbridge a famous victory.

Stourbridge Lions now sit tenth in the league and travel to ninth-placed Stoke next Saturday.
