SANDWELL Lions suffered their first home Midland League home defeat of the season when they lost to Birmingham Monarchs 93-85 in a hard fought match last Sunday.
The Monarchs took the lead in the second heat, showing why they are one of the top teams in the country with some great team spirit.
The Lions saw the return of one of it's favourite sons, Mark Newey, who won three of his five rides, having the misfortune to get excluded for moving at the tapes in one race and taking a fall in another.
Lee Smith scored 19 points, his only defeat coming at the hands of Marcus Waddams in heat three.

Birmingham: Marcus Waddams 17, Paul Heard 15, Nathan Groves 13, Chris Timms 12, Dominic Rycharski 11, Tom Sensicall 9, Mark Winwood 9, Carl Winwood 7.
The Division Two match gave Sandwell some form of revenge, with the return to the track of the evergreen Tony Bowen and Pete Dalley to riding against Birmingham youngsters Billy, Reece and Ryan Winwood.
Sandwell eventually ran out 59-57 winners in another close fought affair.
