Burley pulls off scoop to land Willetts

CAUSEWAY United boss Carl Burley has pulled off a close-season scoop by signing sought after Shifnal striker Duncan Willetts.

The Black-Country based striker scored 16 goals in 18 games for Shifnal at the end of last season and received offers from Bromsgrove,Stourport and Boldmere.

But the former Stratford and Rushall front man has pledged his future to Causeway and will form part of a twin pronged attack with the equally prolific Stuart How.

Burley said he had been looking to improve their attacking options for a while as he didn’t want all the goalscoring burden to be on one player.

He said: “Duncan has got a wealth of experience and to be honest we have done well to get him because he is a quality player and has had offers from a number of other clubs.

“Anyone who looks at our record from last season will see that we need to improve the goal scoring column and this will go a long way towards that.”

But Burley warned he only wants players who want to stay loyal to the club as he announced his retained list this week.

The majority of the squad from last season are staying, but centre half Mark Smith has been released after he failed to turn up for a players’ meeting to sign registration forms.

Burley said: “He didn’t give me any notice or a phone call on the day and to be honest his availability for games over the last two years has been erratic so maybe it is for the best.

“One player who has left the club is Paul Henley, who has joined Dudley Town in a bid to get regular football.

In the FA Cup, Causeway have been drawn at home to Wellington in the extra preliminary round, the tie to be played on Saturday August 15. If they win they will be away to Coleshill Town or Bridgnorth Town on August 29.

In the FA Vase, they are at home to Ellesmere Rangers in the first qualifying round on Saturday September 5 and if they win they will be at home to Ashby Ivanhoe or Coventry Sphinx.
