Whiley wins at end of US trip

HALESOWEN serving sensation Jordanne Whiley finished her trip to the United States with victory at the Florida Open.

The wheelchair tennis star beat Germany’s Katharina Kruger to win the consolation singles in Boca Ranton after playing three tournaments across the pond.

The British number one went out in the first round at the second Super Series tournament of the year.

But victories over Japan’s Miho Nijo and Austria’s Henriett Koosz gained Whiley a place in the consolation final, where she beat Kruger 7-5, 6-3.

Dutch players proved Whiley’s undoing in tournaments in Baton Rouge and Pensacola.

She beat German eighth seed Kruger 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the first event to reach the quarter-finals.

World number three Jiske Grffioen ended Whiley’s challenge in straight sets, with world number one Esther Vergeer defeating her a week later in the second round in Pensacola.

In the doubles, Whiley and partner Lucy Shuker advanced to the final in Baton Rouge, before being beaten by Dutch top seeds Griffioen and Aniek Van Koot.
