Harry Maguire’s “head could have been all over the place” against a Manchester United side that hoped to sign him, says team-mate Ben Chilwell.

However, the Leicester defender’s performance and commitment impressed Chilwell in Friday’s Premier League opener.

One of the Three Lions’ standout performers at the World Cup, the 25-year-old was strongly linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium just a year after arriving from Hull.

Press Association Sport understands United were keen to make a big-money move for Maguire but Leicester’s steadfast refusal to part with another key asset meant no deal came to fruition.

As fate would have it, just a day after the window closed the defender started at Old Trafford as the Foxes suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Jose Mourinho’s side.

It was a taste of what could have been, but Maguire was not fazed and impressed team-mate Chilwell with his display against United.

“It is very good to have Harry back,” the Leicester left-back said.

“We all know what Harry is capable of, we all know how good he is. He could have come here today and his head could have been all over the place, but he did brilliantly.

“He is a Leicester player, he wants to play for Leicester. He has made that clear to all of us. He is going to be here for the whole season.

“He is going to be good for us. We saw that again tonight, how good a player he is. We are all happy that he has stayed.”
