DK focused on play-offs
11:40am Thursday 5th April 2012 in Dudley Kingswinford RFC
DUDLEY Kingswinford are now fully focused on the play-offs after Rugby Lions were crowned National League Three Midland champions.
Ahead of last Saturday’s meeting at Webb Ellis Road, DK still had a slender yet unlikely chance of overhauling the Lions but those hopes were ended by a 19-14 defeat.
While the Heathbrook side still have two league games remaining, attentions will now turn to their home play-off game on April 28.
The Lions remain unbeaten after Saturday’s game in which they were given a stern test by the visitors.
DK actually lead 7-6 at the break before the hosts hit back in the second-half. A late Stefan Shillingford try sparked hopes of a famous win but it was not to be.
Despite the defeat, player-coach Jon Higgins was pleased with the performance.
He said: “It was a pretty good performance from us against the best team in the league, probably one of our best this season.
“It was a strange game in that we did not have a great deal of possession but we defended really, really well.
“We had a couple of chances to snatch it at the end but on the balance of play I think the right team won.”
DK’s display was a marked improvement on their first meeting with the Lions back in December, where they were routed 68-12.
Higgins added: “It just shows how far we have come as a team.”
DK have a break from league action this Saturday when they visit Whitchurch in the North Midlands Cup semi-final.
