South Leicester 7 DK 34
9:03am Monday 23rd April 2012 in Dudley Kingswinford RFC
DUDLEY Kingswinford completed their league campaign with a comprehensive win over South Leicester.
The Heathbrook side avenged an opening day defeat to the hosts and ensure they head into this Saturday’s promotion play-off with Rossendale in excellent form.
After a tight first half, DK raced away in the second period, scoring four tries in the process.
It was the hosts who actually took the lead on seven minutes as good handling created a gap in the DK cover and Connor Smith forced his way through to score, with fly-half Mark Lord adding the conversion.
But the lead lasted just a minute, Matt Farrington crossing near the posts and Gareth Bown kicking the extras.
DK were finding it hard to play their normal game, with much of the play tied up in midfield. Lord missed a chance to edge his side back in front before Bown did put DK in front with a penalty.
Simon Fletcher went close to adding a second try for the visitors on the stroke of half-time as they finished the first period on top.
It took just two minutes of the second half for DK to extend their lead. A strong attack down the left, followed by a powerful break from Stefan Shillingford saw DK’s powerful centre produce an absolute pearl of a popped pass to the onrushing Stefan Thorp. Bown’s conversion increased the lead to 17-7.
South Leicester threw everything at the visitors in an attempt to get back in the game but were repelled at every turn.
Just before the hour mark, DK gained more crucial breathing space as Rich Kelley emerged from the maul to score and make it 22-7.
The hosts’ frustrations were starting to boil and number eight Mike March was yellow carded for a blatant offside.
DK were camped in their opponents half and the pressure finally told as Kelley scored almost a carbon copy of his first try.
A fifth try in stoppage time completed the scoring, Farrington finishing sweeping crossfield move by beating several defenders to score.
