OLD Halesonians RFC claimed a huge victory at top of the league Lichfield.

The 36-8 win, the hosts first defeat of the season, moved Hales within a point of top spot in Midlands One West.

Lichfield’s crowd, so often loud and boisterous, were stunned in silence as the visitors set about stamping their authority on the game The return of Carl Robinson was vital in the win and he set up Luke Smith for the opening score, which was converted by Dave Hadkiss.

Despite the shock of conceding an early try, Lichfield soon hit back with a try of their own.

But Hales were unstoppable and Robinson again provided Smith with the chance for a second try. Even though a Lichfield penalty cut the deficit to 14-8, Pete Fitzgerald went over for the visitors’ third try of the game.

Tim Breakwell’s try before the break secured the bonus point.

Hales maintained an almost continual attack and were rewarded with a fifth from Eoin McMahon.

Hadkiss nailed the conversion and completed a fine individual performance when he set up Steve Powell for the final try.

On Saturday they host Burton.
