OLD Halesonians RFC ran in four tries as they stunned National League outfit Newport in the North Midlands Cup.

The Wassell Grove side, who play a division below the hosts, travelled to Shropshire for the quarter-final tie and came away with a well deserved 31-22 win.

Greg Smith got the ball rolling with a try in the opening minutes, which was converted by Steve Powell.

Carl Robinson extended the lead soon after when he went over and after both sides exchanged penalties, Hales scored a third try before the break through Simon Sabell.

Newport notched their first try early in the second half, but a converted Luke Smith try gave Old Hales sufficient breathing sapce, making the home side’s two late tries mere consolations.

Old Hales resume their Midlands One West campaign this Saturday away at Hereford.

A resounding display from the third XV saw them breeze past Aston Old Edwardians 55-7.

Ben Perks scored a hat-trick of early tries, with Jamie Leach and Steve Deakin also going over for a 31-10 lead at the break.

After weathering the storm, further scores from Ben Roberts and Alex extended the home side’s lead before the visitors did get on the board with a try from their centre.

But Perks added his fourth try and Craig Jukes rounded off a fine performance when he finished a nice passing move.
