Lions come roaring back to beat Spa
11:02am Thursday 31st October 2013 in Stourbridge RFC
STOURBRIDGE Lions cemented third place in Midlands Two West South with a 34-10 success over basement boys Droitwich Spa.
Following last week’s cup defeat to Newbold, the Lions stormed back with a convincing display and could have won by a wider margin.
Droitwich belied their lowly position and applied considerable early pressure which Lions did well to repell.
But once Stourbridge got into their stride, they took charge with centre Aaron Boffey bagging the opening try which Sam Wilson converted.
Boffey’s centre partner Jack Deakin then outsprinted the Spa defence for a second try, before Duncan Chance added a third which Wilson improved upon.
Boffey was sent to the sin-bin and Droitwich kicked the resulting penalty through Bobby Scott-Walker to leave Lions leading 19-3 at half time.
Despite having the advantage of a gale force wind in the second half, Droitwich continually found themselves under pressure and fell further behind when Duncan Chance secured the bonus-point try, taking his tally for the season to 11.
A break by Boffey sent winger James Mitchell over for another score, before Boffey dropped a pass which allowed Droitwich to capitalise on with a converted try.
There was still time for Dan Shrimpton to secure a sixth score for the Lions to leave them compelling winners.
Lions look to keep the pressure on league leaders Earlsdon this week when they entertain Old Coventrians at Stourton Park this Saturday.
