ENGLAND hopeful Will Spencer has saluted Worcester Warriors’ director of rugby Gary Gold for getting the best out of players.

Spencer is among 20 players, including Ryan Mills and Perry Humphreys, involved in an England training camp this week focusing on strength and conditioning.

The powerful lock, who turns 25 later this month, worked with the former South Africa assistant coach during their time together at Bath.

Last month Gold revealed Warriors’ squad for next season could be “a bit smaller”.

More than 20 players have since left the club.

Gold is planning to engage more with the players and show a lot more trust in their abilities.

“I have known Gary since my time at Bath and he’s really good at getting the best out of people,” said the uncapprd Spencer, who played 17 times for Warriors last term.

“He’s a really good man manager and as well as simplifying the game-plan he makes everyone know their roles in every facet of the game.

“He also gives you confidence in training and sends you out with that confidence at the weekend.

“Every player is different, some like to be spoken to differently.

“He’s really good with me.

“He makes a habit of speaking to everyone in the squad on an individual basis so if you are walking past him he will grab a word with you and ask you something outside rugby.

“He’s a really good guy like that and you know he cares about you as an individual and you want to go out on to the pitch and back up his faith.”

Oxford-born Spencer made a huge impact at Sixways after overcoming a back injury which he suffered last summer.

Spencer, who chalked up 11 Premiership appearances during his time at Bath, finally made his Warriors debut against Newport Gwent Dragons in December.

The University of Bath graduate crashed over for crucial tries against Bristol and Bath and became one of first names on Gold’s teamsheet.

“After Gary came in we were very happy with how we played,” said Spencer.

“We went to Wasps, for instance, thinking we could win and didn’t help ourselves going down to 14 men.

“But Sale Sharks away was a big disappointment for us.

“I felt we let ourselves down and gifted them some really easy tries and you can’t do that against anyone in the Premiership.”

He added: “We need to turn tight losses into victories and then we will be in a much better position.

“Guys like Biyi Alo who came off the bench had a huge impact and were sensational.

“Biyi is such a big, strong ball carrier in the last 15 to 20 minutes of matches and you know guys like him can make a difference and increase the tempo.

“If we’re still in games with 15 to 20 minutes to go we are confident we can bring on the bench and they can change matches."
