WORCESTERSHIRE all-rounder Moeen Ali has been omitted from the England squad for the upcoming Test tour of the West Indies.

Moeen does not feature in the 16-man party for the three-Test tour in April and May after suffering a grade one abdominal tear in his left side during the World Cup defeat to Bangladesh.

However, the 27-year-old could join up with the squad later in the tour depending on his progress.

The squad, announced by the England and Wales Cricket Board today, sees Jonathan Trott return for the first time since having to leave the 2013-14 Ashes with a stress-related problem.

Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes also returns, while there are places for his fast-bowling county team-mate Mark Wood, Yorkshire spinner Adil Rashid and opening batsman Adam Lyth - all three uncapped at Test level.

Lyth is likely to contend with Trott for a vacant opener's slot alongside Alastair Cook in place of the dropped Sam Robson.

Lyth and Rashid are among six Yorkshire players selected as captain Alastair Cook picks up the reins again after being replaced as World Cup captain before Christmas, only for England to endure a miserable early exit under Eoin Morgan.

Eight of those who fell short in the 50-over format are retained for the Windies trip.

National selector James Whitaker said: "This series marks the start of a busy period of Test match cricket for the England team, and I am sure that Alastair and the players will all be keen to build on the success they enjoyed last summer against India."

England squad: Alastair Cook (capt, Essex), Adam Lyth (Yorkshire), Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire), Gary Ballance, Joe Root (both Yorkshire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Ben Stokes (Durham), Jos Buttler (wk, Lancashire), Jonathan Bairstow (wk), Adil Rashid, Liam Plunkett (all Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Chris Jordan (Sussex), Mark Wood (Durham), James Tredwell (Kent).
