FORMER Worcestershire skipper Daryl Mitchell has agreed to play for Herefordshire villagers Brockhampton in the Birmingham League.

The 33-year-old opening batsman is hoping to play at least four matches for Brockhampton, near Ross-on-Wye, in the Premier Division this summer.

Mitchell was replaced as Worcestershire’s captain by Joe Leach in the autumn.

He has signed a four-year deal to remain at New Road.

Brockhampton have also snapped up Sri Lankan all-rounder Dinusha Fernando, an overseas star at Bromyard in recent seasons.

Brockhampton chairman Roy Wargen said: “Daryl is probably the best player at Worcestershire next to Moeen Ali.

"The fact he was captain at Worcestershire means he will be a tremendous asset for us.

"He's a really nice guy and he is only 33.

"I've also signed Fernando, who will be our overseas player.

"You need these people to succeed and help your younger players."

Mitchell said he jumped at the opportunity when he was approached to play club cricket at The Parks.

The experienced batsman will follow in the footsteps of Worcestershire team-mate Charlie Morris who has previously been attached to the Herefordshire club.

“Brockhampton play in an idyllic village location which I like," said Mitchell, the new Professional Cricketers Association chairman.

"They've got a good squad and team spirit and will be looking to consolidate in the Premier Division.

"They have done fantastically well in recent years to get to where they are.”

Mitchell added: "It's just nice to have the opportunity to play club cricket, especially if I'm not doing well for my county.

"I enjoy playing cricket and because I'm no longer captain at Worcestershire, it will probably free up a bit of spare time."
