BLACK Country comedy sensation Doreen Tipton is working her way towards the A-list instead of the lazy list after winning a Great British Pantomime Award for her debut panto appearance.

Doreen, played by Walsall actress Gill Jordan, walked away with the award for best newcomer at the awards, held last night (Sunday March 12) at The Theatre Café in London, following her appearance as The Lazy Empress (pictured below) in Wolverhampton Grand’s recent production of Aladdin.

Created originally as a spoof internet character by Quarry Bank playwright/film-maker David Tristram, Doreen has gone from strength to strength – appearing in a series of sold out stage shows, her very own feature length movie and her own internet comedy channel before landing her own panto role alongside You’ve Been Framed and Emmerdale star Lisa Riley and X Factor singer Joe McElderry.

Dudley News:

She’s also hosted her own radio show on Radio WM and even published an autobiography (written by somebody else!).

However – the panto award, which was presented by Christopher Biggins, is perhaps her biggest achievement to date.

And such was Doreen’s popularity in The Grand’s popular panto – she has already been cast to appear in the 2017/18 show Jack and the Beanstalk starring Gareth Gates.

She is also preparing for her second big solo venture at The Grand later this year - Doreen: The Rise of the Yam Yam – on Sunday October 22.

Doreen creator David Tristram, who wrote the character’s lines for Aladdin, said of Doreen’s continued success: “This is all part of the master plan to put the Black Country well and truly on the world map.

“Our brand new autumn show “Rise of the Yam-Yam” will pursue this theme even further, and I fully expect Doreen to be winning an Oscar in the States next year – especially if they manage to hand out the wrong envelope.”

Doreen is also in the running for the What’s On Midlands Entertainment Personality of the Year Award - alongside A-listers Julie Walters, Lenny Henry, Beverley Knight and Citizen Khan’s Adil Ray.
