JON Higgins has urged Dudley Kingswinford to grasp their chance of safety against Caldy this Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

The Heathbrook side go into the game knowing victory will guarantee they remain in National Two North next season should Westoe lose at home to league leaders Stourbridge.

DK are breathing easier after last weekend’s 14-12 win at Luctonians snapped a five game losing streak and extended the gap between them and the drop zone to eight points with four games to go.

And joint player-coach Higgins is keen for his side to end any lingering doubts as soon as possible.

He said: “If we can win on Saturday and Westoe lose it’s over.

“It would be nice to finish it off at home and make no bones about it, I expect us to win the game.

“It’s a great opportunity for us.”

Victory at Luctonians lifted another considerable monkey off DK’s back as it was their first away win this season.

And coming against a home side which prides itself in having the type of powerful pack which has proved too tough for the visitors so often this campaign, Higgins admitted the triumph was unexpected.

Joe Carpenter scored DK’s only try and they held out against fierce pressure in the closing stages as the hosts looked to snatch victory late on.

He said: “If ever there was a game I didn’t think we would win it would be Luctonians away in the rain and mud.

“But we pulled it out of the bag.

“The forwards were outstanding, they really fronted up. They have taken some stick over the course of this season but hats off to them, they really showed resilience, dug in and had heart.

“Our defence was also outstanding and considering the conditions the try we scored was top drawer.”

DK could be boosted further by the return of Higgins’ fellow player-coach Pete Knight, who has recovered from a hamstring injury quicker than expected.

Higgins added: “The only frustrating thing about Saturday is why we haven’t produced that type of performance more often this season.

“We have lost eight games by single scores and with a bit more composure we could easily be sitting seventh or eighth in the league.

“I really don’t think we are a million miles away.”
