Our End to End journey reached a successful conclusion on Wednesday June 19 at Land’s End.

The cycling gods managed one last challenge on our final day with a road closure just 30 miles from our destination due to a car accident.

The police officer in charge of blocking our way was sympathetic to our cause but not enough to let us past - however he did make a point of coming to the services where we had taken refuge to let us know when the road was reopened.

The 912 miles we cycled in 12 days still looks a long way on the map. I am not sure I have yet come to terms with the end of a project that had become something of an obsession over the last six months.

What is already clear is the value of the contribution made by my family and friends in terms of support, encouragement and advice.

Without all of these people - you know who you are – I would have failed and my gratitude goes out to you all.

Warren Evans was an excellent travelling companion. I reminded him every day, usually when it was raining and we were battling our way up a huge hill, that this was his idea.

His determination to overcome the odds when faced with an illness that would have sent most people scurrying to their bed was remarkable and gets him the man-of-the-match award from me.

The most important people are those who donated to Dementia UK in recognition of the ride including  the many we met on the road.

The world will now be a better place for people facing a terrible disease thanks to all of those kind souls.

As we covered the last few miles I considered what I had learned during our journey.
