"IT'S going to happen again" is the chilling message from councillors who fear someone else will be killed at a notorious accident blackspot if safety measures are not installed soon.

The lethal stretch of Dudley's Birmingham New Road between Priory Road and the Burnt Tree Island has become a rat run over the last eight years, according to worried councillors.

The road has already claimed the life of 86-year-old former Dudley headteacher Margaret Allen this year.

Mrs Allen died on January 15 when the Ford Fiesta she was driving was in collision with a Peugeot 106 at the junction of Birmingham New Road and Woodcroft Avenue.

A ten-year-old girl was also left lying injured in Priory Road after being knocked down in a hit and run on New Year's Day.

Leah Webb, of Maple Road, was crossing Priory Road using the pedestrian crossing near Cedar Road when she was hit by a car.

Now Castle and Priory councillors Margaret Aston and Ken and Alan Finch have teamed up with Dudley North MP Ian Austin to get something done.

The team are calling for a meeting with the Highways Agency and the West Midlands Casualty Reduction Partnership at the scene to see how bad the road has got.

Cllr Aston said: "It's a rat run. There is one accident after another down that road.

"As ward councillors we've had lots of problems with this road and have been trying for years to get something done.

"We hope now they'll sit up and listen and get something done before there are any more accidents.

"It's time something was done. It's going to happen again.

"The residents are really upset about this."

Concerned nearby residents have called for traffic calming measures to be installed on the road.

Dudley North MP Ian Austin said: "This stretch of road is notorious.

"These problems have been going on for years.

"There have been a number of accidents recently and we must avoid any further tragedies.

"I want to know what the Highways Agency and the Casualty Reduction Partnership can do to solve the problem."
